Opening Night: Tuesday, November 1, at 7:00pm - Ramallah Cultural Palace
The 9th annual Palestine Cinema Days will kick off this week, on Tuesday, November 1, with the Palestinian film nominated to the 2023 Oscars, “Mediterranean Fever” by Maha Haj, from Nazareth.
This year, Palestine Cinema Days will screen 58 films bringing together cinema lovers in seven cities: Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jenin, Birzeit, Haifa and Gaza. A new highlight of the film festival this year will be the subprogram, “Voicing Visual Memory”, commemorating 40 years since the exodus of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) from Beirut. The subprogram will include the screening of films from that period, panel discussions and a book launch. This year, Palestine Cinema Days is honored to host Hussein El Qalla, a prominent, Egypt-based Palestinian producer, who produced several films that are considered among the hallmarks of Egyptian cinema.
By including Q&A sessions with filmmakers in attendance and by offering masterclasses, Palestine Cinema Days creates a unique space for discussing film and creating a cinephile culture. Reflecting Filmlab’s year-around activities, and in the same spirit of enhancing the cinema culture in Palestine, a special line up of films will be programmed for the younger generation.
Stemming from our belief in the importance of creating space for art, creativity, and innovation, for the sixth year in a row, Palestine Cinema Days has opened the Sunbird Awards which will hold three Sunbird Competition Awards: Shorts, Production and Documentaries. These three competitive sections aim at highlighting the finest new short films, feature-length documentaries, and promising short film projects related to Palestine.
The 9th edition of Palestine Cinema Days continues to grow as a platform showcasing Palestinian cinema, as well as strong and bold narratives from Arab and world cinema and reaffirms its status as the first and only platform for Palestinian cinema and reinforces its leading role in strengthening the Palestinian cinema industry, fostering the local talents, and connecting with the global film industry.
The festival will open on November 1 at the Ramallah Cultural Palace, with the Palestinian Premiere of Maha Haj “Mediterranean Fever”. The film won several awards; Best Screenplay, Un Certain Regard, Cannes Film Festival 2022; Firebird Award, Hong Kong Film Festival, 2022.
